Our History
1960 - 1974
After
the 1958 construction, growth came quickly. McCordsville Methodist Church
also experienced growth during the same period At the time, Mt
Comfort was sharing a minister with the McCordsville Methodist Church.
Like in 1915, McCordsville requested to be a separate station. The
request was granted. Mt Comfort was forced to either join another
church and share a minister or to to stand alone. The decision
was made to maintain separate status.
The first parsonage of Mt Comfort was
built under the direction of Floyd Kuhn. Just 7 months after the
plans were accepted, the building was built. The three bedroom, 1 bathroom
house was in front of the church facing Mt Comfort Rd. Pastor Dwayne
Jones was the first occupant. Pastors that followed included Mendel
E. Adams (1965-1968), and J. Scott Wood (1969-1974) The church
continued the tradition of the community smorgasbord. In 1967, the
event had to be held in the Mt Comfort School cafeteria to accommodate the
large crowd. All seem to be going
well, but May 1972 marked the beginning of the end of an important era.
On Mothers Day, disaster struck when a tornado touched the church.
It was not a big storm and nobody was hurt but the frame of the church
shifted off the foundation.
The decision was made to build a new
church. The formal groundbreaking ceremony was held April 1, 1973.
Services, although structurally damaged, continued to be held in the old
building. On Sunday October 14, 1973 was the final day of preparation. The
congregation held a 24 hour prayer vigil asking God bless the new
structure. The first services in the new building was October 21, 1974.

The building came to a cost of $100,000. The value of
the building far exceeded this figure because much of the finish work was
done by church members, including insulation, painting, interior wood
finish, ceiling tile, carpeting, walks and landscaping. The facility
included a large worship center, eleven classrooms, a conference room, an
office, and a kitchen with amenities like air conditioning, extensive
sound system and laboratories in three classrooms. The members of
the building committee were Floyd Kuhn, Chairman; Marvin Sparks,
Treasurer; Rose McKinney, Secretary; Don Kennedy; Ortin Ralstin and Jerry
Fentz.
The 88 year old patchwork structure was demolished by
volunteers. Each board, block and shingle was slowly taken apart as all shared
the memories of weddings, baptisms, funerals, Sunday services and Bible
Schools marking the beginning of new memories in our new building.
