Our History
1928 - 1958
Mt
Comfort was a church that helped many parents and grandparents through
some of the worst times in our nation's history. If the walls and floorboards could talk, they would tell of support they
offered as the district prayed while the Great Depressions ravaged the
country and closed its jaws on everyone. Those same boards could
also tell of the many joyous baptisms and weddings which occurred through
the years.
In 1938, the national leadership of the
various Methodist groups decided the unify. As a result, Mt Comfort
dropped the term Episcopal from the name and became the Mt Comfort
Methodist Church. In the 40's, the
community and the church settled into a period of slow and steady growth.
Vacation Bible School, 4-H Fair Food Stands and Christmas Caroling at
Burn's Nursing Home and the annual Smorgasbord at the church. These were
the days of Sam and Laura Scalf, Georgia and John Thomas,, Allen and
Stella Eastes, Jim and Mickey Fentz, Lula Blue, Ruth Kelly and a hundred
other people who devoted their hands and hearts to keep the church alive
and growing. In 1952, the church yard was landscaped. In 1954, the
parking lot was expanded and a bulletin board was installed in front of
the church. In 1956, Mt Comfort Methodist Church needed more space
and once again remodeling began. In 1958, the construction was
complete. Mt Comfort consecrated the new sanctuary on August 20.
It was a far more beautiful area of worship. The wood was blonde and
a gold velvet drape was hung behind the new pulpit. The ever burning
light and the brass cross (which currently adorns our sanctuary) were part
of this remodeling. Many of the additions along with other donations were
memorial donations. On September 21, 1958, the church held its 30th
annual Homecoming.
