Our History

1889 - 1927

During much of the early time, Mt Comfort was a part of the McCordsville Charge and the two congregations shared a minister.  However in 1915, McCordsville petitioned to become a sole sponsor of their own minister.  The petition was granted and Mt Comfort joined with Maxwell (1915-1923) and later with the same charge with Philadelphia (1923-1930).  Despite these changes in status, the original Mt Comfort Church served the community well.  Through the graveling of roads, the introduction of the automobile, the paving of a National Road, US 40 and World War I.

In 1927, there was simply not enough room in the rectangular framed church. Expansion was necessary and Mt Comfort underwent a major remodeling.  The original structure was raised four feet and stone blocks were placed underneath to form a foundation. A new section was added to the south side. A new steeple was added.  The sanctuary was  renovated and beneath the church was dug a full basement. The basement provided area for Sunday School classes and youth group activities including a annual Vacation Bible School program.  A kitchen was added in the basement to accommodate the need for such facilities during pitch in dinners and later the church community smorgasbord, which became a yearly tradition. During the time of remodeling. Church services were held at the Mt Comfort School Building.  A three story brick building close to the church.

The expansion of the church was completed in 1927. The Mount Comfort Methodist Episcopal Church was ready to meet the hard times that were coming.
