1888 - New Beginnings
"Ves"
Estes envisioned a future that needed a thriving community church and the
site sold to the trustees was perfect. A solid piece of level ground. The
town around the location had five houses, a combination store, a post
office and a blacksmith shop (where the fire station is now). The railroad
promised great growth and Mt Comfort Rd (known as Highway Street) was
becoming a well traveled pike of buggies, wagons, carts, and mounted
riders. The town grew with a new grain elevator, a canning factory, a tile
works and later a school, a fire station, a bank, an industrial plant, a
telephone exchange and a growing number of homes. .
Trustees William Eastes, James Collins
and Hamilton Welling hired a local farmer named James Murphy to build the
one room rectangular frame church. People hitched their horses to
the racks around the church and entered the building from the west side.
Once inside the seats were divided down the middle aisle and you could sit
on either side. The east side of the building was a raised platform for
which sat the pulpit. On the right of the platform were chairs for
the choir. The pulpit was in the center. The primary source of light was
the eight high arched windows that flanked the room, four along the north
wall and an equal number along the south. Added light came from oil lamps
that hung from the ceiling. In the winter, the building was heated
by two coal or wood stoves located on each side about halfway to the
front.
The building was completed
and dedicated in November 1888 by Reverend C.W. Wade to a total membership
of 72 people.
