Our History
1870-1888
The church continued to nurture the community for eighteen
years, but some of these years were not he best times for the church.
One history book reports that membership was small and in 1882 preaching
at the church was semi-occasionally.
The reason was mainly because of location
In 1887, The area around the Hopewell Chapel was almost abandoned. The O.O
Harvey's blacksmith shop, Ray's store and other cabins around the Hopewell
Chapel were closed. With the improvement of roads, bridges and the
railroad Mt Comfort was moved north.
In 1887, Silas Sylvester Eastes, one
grandson of founder Obediah, for the sum of $100 conveyed nearly an acre
of land to the trustees of the Methodist Episcopal Church. The
location is where our current church stands today.
"In trust that the said premises shall be
used, kept, and maintained as a place of divine worship for the use of the
ministry and membership of the Methodist Episcopal Church in the United
States of America." We at Mt
Comfort owe a great debt to the many who struggled during the pioneer
years to maintain faith in our community. To the Eastes family we owe
special gratitude. Down through the years, the Eastes continued a
foundation of support for the church up to the death of Stella Eastes in
1988.
